IF YE BREAK FAITH
( J. Wilson)
© Ochiltree 136 Publishing (2007)
There was nothing for me there before I met you –
after market day when we lay in the fields
and whispered honeysuckle secrets on a prairie wind
You gave me faith
That soft summer night when your hands healed me –
a mix of tea-tree, grapefruit, thyme and lavender
You had found the one I thought I’d lost forever
You gave me faith
You gave me faith
And the bells will surely ring out loud in sympathy
The bells ring out for knowledge, truth and charity
Hear the bells now ring out loud for justice
Sometimes there is no peace
Sometimes there is no peace
There were joyful noises on that eastbound train –
armed with just your portrait and your grudging consent –
at the gateway to the Ypres Salient
I needed faith
When the barbed wire wasn't cut and the shelling yielded naught
I found myself in the ‘unlikely scenario'
I knew I’d likely seen my last tomorrow
I needed faith
I needed faith
And the bells will surely ring out loud in sympathy
The bells ring out for knowledge, truth and charity
Hear the bells now ring out loud for justice
Sometimes there is no peace
Sometimes there is no peace
The din of mourners stirs me near the breaking of the sword
But it’s not for me to creep back up my own half-known road
I would have to carry such a heavy, heavy load, no –
I’ll lie here –
awake if ye break faith
