dREaD & BLUE -
SAMPLES / MUSIC - SPECIAL GUESTS Set-Lists
We are delighted that so many of you want to see
the set-lists from the tour and so, we are happy to
introduce this new "Set-lists" page. Part of Tabarruk's
magic is that you will never (or very, very rarely)
see the same show twice. On the last tour we played 88 different
songs - from rare originals to obscure covers from all
genres, we like to keep you guessing. So even if you can't
be at the show - at least you'll know what we played!

September / Mulmur, ON / Mulmur-Stock Two
[Perry
Joseph & Friends, with Michael Herring and Jason Wilson from
Tabarruk] A
grand time was had by all at the legendary Mulmurstock –
second edition. Dan and the rest of the Orangeville crew got the
night rolling with some heavy blues – wicked. Then, Gordon
Shawcross teamed up with PJ for a set of fantastic Meet Joe
Cross tracks, including my favourites ‘Oblivious’ and
‘Ready or Not’. Danger Herring sat in for various
incarnations of the evening’s band. As for my set, well, er,
okay, I had just seen Van the Man back in TO, so you might think
that there was an extra amount of the Belfast Cowboy’s
material in my set, and you’d be right – it worked but! PJ
added a few other Tab standards – and yes, another Van song
too! ‘Hands in the Water’ made the set for only the third
time ever – keep in mind that it was written for Jonah
but it didn’t make the final cut – but we found that it
worked perfectly on dREaD
& BLUE. review

August / Mont Tremblant, PQ / Rythmes Tremblant Festival **5 STAR SHOW*** [The
Quintet – minus Perry Joseph and with Don Scott on guitar] There
was a complete reversal of fortune in attendance from the
previous night. No question in my mind, this show rates as one
of the best – ever!!! Besides my brutal cold that the boys
helped me fight through during the ninety-minute set, there is
nothing I would have changed about the night. The sound was
fantastic, the band rocking and the couple of thousand people in
the outside amphitheatre loving every minute of it! From the
opening of the Skatallites’ classic ‘Confucius’ to the
rare Wailers’ cut, ‘Soul Shakedown Party’, it was a night
that I will not soon forget. review

August / Wakefield, PQ / The Black Sheep Inn
[The
Quintet – minus Perry Joseph and with Don Scott on guitar] God
bless Paul at the Black Sheep. A handful of folks saw a mellow
but entertaining show in one of the most beautiful villages in
our country. Despite the turn-out, or indeed, because of it, the
show was a lot of fun. Various ballads that often get overlooked
were included, not to mention the various requests that we
encouraged from the couple of tables of brave Tabarruk fans who
had come from Ottawa. Thelonius Monk’s ‘In Walked Bud’
returned to the setlist after a year’s absence. Paul, we’ll
make it up to you – I promise! review

August / Toronto, ON / The Distillery
[The
Quartet – minus Perry Joseph and with Don Scott on guitar] Brownman’s
walking pneumonia kept him from today’s show. We all battled
various cold type symptoms, but managed to struggle through what
was otherwise a pleasant summer day. Big healthy crowd at the
Distillery today – it shows that advertising helps as many had
just seen us on CBC’s The NATIONAL the previous Thursday. The
Sergei Prokofiev styled version of ‘Exodus’ was lively but
Van the Man’s ‘Rough God Goes Riding’ was my fave. Don
Scott’s jazz-stylings were a wicked addition to the trio. review

[The
Trio] What
do you mean we’ve got a gig? We just got back!!! Brave souls
were in attendance with the prospect of a storm that never came.
It felt a little naked up there without Brownman and PJ, but
after a few songs I think we held our own. There was a decidedly
Celtic feel to tonight’s show, although Ellington’s
‘Caravan’ and Shorter’s ‘Footprints’ weighed in for
the jazzers. review

August / Winnipeg, MB / The Osborne Village Freehouse
[The
Quintet] An
all-night drive to Winnipeg, but it was worth it – especially
for one very happy drummer who shall remain nameless! As it was
a last-minute show, the crowd was “small but warm”. PJ’s
collaboration with Gordon Shawcross, ‘Jordan’ made its
second-leg debut. Leroy Sibbles’ ‘Baby’ was a fun
addition, as was UB40’s ‘Where Did I Go Wrong’ which had
been out of the setlist for over 10 years! We began the second
set with Bob’s ‘Waiting in Vain’ while it was still
playing on the jukebox – making a lot of people scratch their
heads – ‘were we really playing it?’ Hold the presses,
Jakey sat in on drums during ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’, to allow
said happy drummer a moment to dance with the belle of the ball!

August / Calgary, AB / The Den (Calgary University)
[The
Quintet] A
short but pleasant show followed the big festival gig. Some real
roots tonight – there was a lot of reggae classics, including
one of the oldest songs in the Tabarruk setlist; Carl
Malcolm’s ‘No Jestering’, which we originally recorded for
a 4-song demo in 1989, but has since become one of the hardcore
fans’ favourite! review

**5 STAR SHOW*** [The

strong argument could be made in calling this show, the best of
the year. Short but sweet – and the beautiful crowd were so
very supportive, indeed, a standing ovation was a rather nice
touch I thought!

August / Red Deer, AB / The Vat
[The
Quintet] Our
first visit to Red Deer was a blast. And, in keeping with the
‘metaphysical’ nature of the evening, the setlist reflected
the night perfectly. Thelonius Monk’s ‘Friday the 13th’
made its Tabarruk debut, while Stevie Wonder’s
‘Superstition’ also found its way into the set. Brownman’s
more “skeptical” view of the planet was laid out in UB40’s
‘Don’t Let it Pass You By’, while Jakey challenged back
with Tabarruk’s own ‘Wicked Shall Weep’. In the words of
Browning, (not Brownman!), ‘I show you doubt, to prove that
faith exists.’ Jackie Mittoo’s ‘Who Done It?’ also made
its tour debut. review

STAR SHOW*** [The
Quintet] When
the crowd is on the ‘thin-side’, the show, very rarely, has
the necessary energy to be memorable. This was an exception. One
of the best shows of the summer – a definite “Springsteen
Set” to be sure. There were so very many highlights and those
that were in attendance were really responsible for making the
night magical. Danger’s family was well represented and
appropriately raucous during bass solos! Ray Charles’ ‘Hit
the Road Jack’ returned to the set for the first time in a few
weeks. review

& 12 August / Canmore, AB / The Drake Inn
[The
Quintet] A
rare pair of shows on a Tuesday and Thursday at Canmore’s
legendary Drake Inn sandwiched our trip up to Edmonton. Brian
and the posse at Canmore made us feel just at home as usual.
Remarkably, the crowd was great on the Tuesday and nearly as
good on the Thursday. Black Uhuru’s ‘Sensimillia’,
UB40’s ‘The Key’ and Dylan’s ‘Jokerman’ were among
the Tuesday night highlights, whereas, Springsteen’s ‘Lost
in the Flood’ stole the show on the Thursday. It should be
mentioned that PJ had to sing ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ twice
for a bride to be in the audience! Brownman’s ‘Sao Jrel’
also made its first appearance into the set after too long of a
break. review

[The
Quintet] Tabarruk
became the first reggae band to ever play Yorkton, Saskatchewan
and the dance floor was packed from beginning to end – both
nights! Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe’ was a first-timer, and Sly
& Robbie’s rhythm under Tracy Chapman’s ‘Sorry’ was
a song that returned to the set after several years.

[The

Guest, Nick “Brownman” Ali flew in from Toronto to join us
for the remainder of the tour – a welcome addition as always.
Unfortunately, very few got to see a really good show here
tonight – but I’m happy to say that my Aunt Iris & Uncle
Flip were two of them (their first ever Tabarruk show). George
Jones’ ‘She Thinks I Still Care’ were among the more
interesting shows of the evening. review by

STAR SHOW*** [The
Quartet] This
was our first “Springsteen” set of the summer – 32 songs
played to a late, but none-the-less, packed house! We began the
second set of the night with the exciting original ‘Downsview
Shockout’. Earlier, Michael “Danger” Herring, added an
interesting twist to the night by kicking off ‘Stop That
Train’ and catching the band off-guard – in a good way!
Various special guests tonight - including Marnie on Djembe -
Bobby M. on vocals and Alana Banana who floored us with her
surprise visit. It was a typical Saskatoon show – double
encore . . . what a night!

August / Thunder Bay, ON / Gargoyles
[The
Quartet] Tabarruk
kicked off the second leg of the tour without special guest Nick
“Brownman” Ali. With a typical tour beginning, there were
many songs that we played that we had never played before, or at
least in a long time. The Gargoyles dinner crowd brought out the
jazzy side of the band, which meant more bass solos, which gives
everyone time to go to the bathroom. Warren Zevon’s ‘Boom
Boom Mancini’ is becoming one of my favourite new covers that
we play. The second set brought out a special guest Tedray
Kirkton on percussion. The band played dREaD
& BLUE track ‘One More Colour’ for the first time
and, accidentally, an up version of UB40’s ‘Present Arms’.
A great start to the tour!

STAR SHOW*** [The
Quintet plus special guests Marcus Ali (tenor sax) and Garfield
Stoddart (guitar/vocals)] It's
always a bit nerve racking playing for the home crowd - add that
it was a reggae-wise crowd doubles the pressure! But we like the
pressure. It was a short 50 minute set and we threw in quite a
few cover songs to set the mood. During 'Brother', we did what I
like to call an "Irie Music Medley", featuring
songs by headliners of the previous Irie Music Festivals.
The medley included; Maxi Priest's 'Wild World', Third World's
'96° in the Shade' and Toots & The Maytals' '54-46'. It was a
pleasure having Garfield Stoddart guesting on guitar and Marcus
Ali blowing beautifully during 'Soon Come, Jackie'. We were well
appreciated and encouraged to do an encore - the old Wailers'
classic 'Soul Shakedown Party'. All around solid gig! review by -
